The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) is set to make history as the first political party in the country to present a maritime platform to Nigerians ahead of the general election.
This is because the party has considered the sector a priority area since it is the second highest source of income in the country. Therefore, the party’s presidential flag bearer, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, alongside his running mate, Bishop Isaac Idahosa, and other party stalwarts are due to travel to Lagos on Tuesday for the purpose.
Senator Kwankwaso, who will be the special guest at a town hall meeting at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, will take the opportunity to interact with maritime stakeholders to determine the particular needs of this vital but neglected sector of the economy.
The forum will also offer the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement the opportunity to strike a social contract with stakeholders on what they should expect from the NNPP government should the party come to power in 2023. The event, scheduled for 11:00 a.m., will be chaired and led by a maritime technocrat, Otunba Kunle Folarin, also chairman of the Nigerian Ports Consultative Council (NPCC).
According to Mr. Kingsley Anaroke, the Director of Administration and Communications, Prime Maritime Project (PMP) organizers and event managers in a statement, emergencies in the maritime industry called for the need to integrate the maritime agenda into the political programs of political parties.
“PMP interfaces with all political party decision makers and more importantly, their various presidential candidates to secure a Social Contract with maritime industry stakeholders.
“We believe it is high time to stop watching politics impose an unsightly fate on industry, and instead redirect our collective fortunes by playing the right politics of participation for a sustainable industry,” the statement added. Opening remarks would be expected from the founder of NNPP, Dr. Boniface Okechukwu Aniebonam, the Ozo Ebubechukwu Umuawulu, who also serves as the chairman, board of directors (BoT) and spiritual leader of the party.
Key industry players covering all segments of the sector, including public and government establishments, are expected to attend the forum. Rapporteurs will be present to bring together all the essential decisions to be made at the town hall meeting regarding the needs of the sector which will form the documented social contract between the stakeholders and the party.
Recall that the 22-year-old NNPP is an offshoot of the National Association of Government Licensed Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), which was founded by Dr. Aniebonam in 1999.
It was one of 18 political parties that survived the crushing blow of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The NNPP was founded as the political wing of the NAGAFF with the aim of integrating maritime commerce and allied businesses into the good governance of the country.
