Gujarat Maritime University (GMU) is an enterprise of the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB), the state regulatory body for ports and maritime activities in Gujarat. The University was designed by visionaries to meet the growing need for skilled labor in the ever-changing dynamics of the maritime sector. The University began its academic journey from 2019 with the establishment of its first school – School of Maritime Law, Policy and Administration (SMLPA), which offers Master of Laws and Executive Degree programs in Maritime Law and Law international trade. The University also offers an MBA in shipping and logistics as part of its School of Maritime Management (SMM). Aiming to create an institution of global standards, GMU has collaborated with internationally renowned institutions such as Erasmus University, STC International, CBS Executive, ISWAN, and many more such alliances will be forged in the time to come. .
On GMU Academy on Ocean Law and Policy
Academy is a one-week course dedicated to matters relating to the law of the sea. The event will be offer an informative overview of the ocean governance regime and the current challenges the world faces in regulating the oceans and seas. It will consist of a series of online sessions led by experts on topics such as fisheries conservation, seabed mining, protection of submarine cables, protection of the Arctic marine ecosystem, and more. The Academy will bring together a prestigious faculty of Tribunal judges, professors and maritime professionals with a dedicated group of highly motivated participants from around the world.
Importance of the course
The Academy will contribute to the goals of expanding knowledge and having a positive impact on society. The event will contribute to a better understanding and dissemination of emerging challenges in the law of the sea and will motivate young scholars to do research focused on these contemporary challenges in ocean governance. It will provide a platform for scholars and professionals from our region to interact with some of the renowned experts in the Law of the Sea. The event would be ideal for students, researchers, scholars and professionals who wish to enhance their expertise in right of the sea.
Course objective:
· Provide an overview of the legal regime related to ocean governance.
· Raising awareness of the contemporary issues of ocean regulation.
