Maritime workers render an admirable service to humanity by helping to move ships and various goods from one port to another. Seafarers face many challenges when working on long-term contracts, at sea and away from home. These include issues related to repatriation, abandonment, non-payment of wages, etc. In view of the problems encountered by seafarers in international waters, certain forward-looking developments have taken place in international law. Today there are many conventions and recommendations on working conditions in the maritime transport sector. The objective of these is to ensure decent working conditions for seafarers and to guarantee economic interests through fair competition for quality shipowners.

The Academy of Maritime Labor Law aims to raise awareness of the current legal regime related to maritime labor law. A wide range of topics, including recruitment, employment contracts, issues related to the abandonment of seafarers, will be covered at the event. The sessions will be moderated by some of the foremost experts in Indian and foreign maritime law.
