Forescout launches cyber-resilient technology for maritime industry

US-based Forescout Technologies has launched commercial device visibility and control technology to improve cybersecurity in the maritime industry.

The platform will help maritime operators comply with the precise operational technology (OT) security requirements for maritime cybersecurity set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Maritime operators are required to follow IMO guidelines on cyber risks, which came into force on January 1.

The guidelines include IT and OT systems, as well as several tactical preparations and engineering checks, such as assessing the impact of a cyberattack and performing safeguards for deck, propulsion and cargo handling.

Shipowners and operators can lose access to ports or even face detention of ships if they fail to address cyber risks in accordance with IMO regulations.

Kevin O’Leary, Product Manager, Forescout, said, “Modern ships are floating cities with navigation, propulsion, electrical power generation, fuel distribution and water treatment, and other networked systems. such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), video surveillance and automated security checks.

“With these expansive technologies, the damage a cyber incident can cause to critical systems can be extensive and difficult to contain due to poor visibility and insufficient control of all connected assets.

“Forescout has an established track record in maritime operations and now offers the power of complete operational technology (OT) network visibility and system integration with old and new bridge control systems.”

This development follows an increase in cyberattacks on OT systems in the industry over the past three years.

Forescout provides comprehensive device visibility and an advanced threat detection system for all maritime control networks, as well as surveillance applications.

By deploying Forescout eyeInspect, maritime operators can mitigate or avoid operational issues before they face potential danger.
